immigrants, poor people, queer people of color, disabled folks, women (esp trans women of color) and gender-nonconforming folks if you are in academia and you don’t feel smart enough, remember that you are in the playground and training grounds of the elite. academia was not designed to include you. you are surviving something that has been systemically designed to exclude you in order to keep power in the hands of white, middle class, able bodied cis-men.

knowing this, don’t let academia train you to believe that elitism is the right way to make it through school. you can learn shit, hold the knowledge of your people in your heart, discard shame for your humble beginnings and/or marginalized identities. move through this experience knowing that the changes it offers you don’t have to include accepting academic elitism, inaccessible language or superiority. you can can simultaneously own the privilege that comes with being college educated and connections to your roots. academia does not have to kill your spirit.

End of speech, it's the end of the day.: This post is long overdue.

busfolkliving:

I don’t care if you’re the coolest fucking bro in town or the most misunderstood pseudo-intellectual indie kid. If I find out that you demean anyone because of their gender, race, disability, or sexual orientation, I will want nothing to do with you. Reading obscure literature, listening to the Velvet Underground, and doing drugs all the time does not make you original or interesting. Being conventionally attractive doesn’t make you better than anyone else. You’re bullshit ironic racism is still racism. Get the fuck away from me.

Tell TOMS To Cut Ties with Anti-Gay, Anti-Choice, Anti-Woman Group

TOMS Shoes founder Blake Mycoskie has begun working closely with the notorious extreme right-wing, anti-gay, anti-choice, anti-woman fundamentalist Christian group Focus on the Family.

He recently appeared at a Focus on the Family event where he discussed “faith in action” with Focus on the Family president Jim Daly. Focus On The Family is in the process of becoming a TOMS international distributor in Africa.

The TOMS “One for One” movement, which matches every pair of shoes sold with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need, has become extremely popular with consumers who appreciate the philanthropic benefits of buying TOMS.

This affiliation with a group founded on anti-gay, anti-woman, anti-choice principles tarnishes the company’s reputation as a force for good. What’s more, TOMS affiliation with this extreme right-wing group serves to legitimize the fringe organization.

This Is Important, You Should Know About It of the Day: Republican presidential nomination hopeful Michele Bachmann is the first candidate to sign the “pro-marriage” pledge of conservative Christian group The Family Leader.
According to the Des Moines Register, those who sign “The Marriage Vow” [pdf] agree “to personal fidelity to his or her spouse, the appointment of ‘faithful constitutionalists’ as judges, opposition to any redefinition of marriage, and prompt reform of uneconomic and anti-marriage aspects of welfare policy, tax policy and divorce law.”
The vow also affirms the signee’s belief that homosexuality is a public health risk and a choice, and on par with polygamy and polyandry.
Worse still is the vow’s shocking suggestion that children born into African-American families under slavery were better off than they are today because they were “more likely to be raised by [their] mother and father in a two-parent household.”
And, finally, for good measure, candidates who sign the pledge must also make a point of rejecting Sharia law.
A spokesman for Rep. Ron Paul has expressed reservations on behalf of the congressman, while Tim Pawlenty’s spokesman said the former Minnesota governor was reviewing the document. Most of the other candidates refused to comment on their plans; only Jon Huntsman has stated (through an aide) that he will not sign the pledge as he “never signs any pledges.” Family Leader CEO Bob Vander Plaats — who was state chair of Mike Huckabee’s Republican presidential campaign in 2008 — said his organization will only support candidates who sign the pledge.
(NB: It should be noted that the controversial passage in the pledge that refers to the “protection” of women and children from “all forms of pornography” may not be a call for the outright banning of porn as some assert, but is certainly worth questioning.)

I never understood anger towards gay people, because a person being gay doesn’t affect your life. So, it’s weird to me that people are in their homes going, ‘Ugh, people are gay… Dammit!

I fucking love this bit.
Louis CK is pretty cool.

Tiger Beatdown: Tyler, The Creator, Creates 43-Year-Old “Joke”

It didn’t fucking matter. They didn’t think to factor it in. In point of fact, what much of the criticism about Odd Future has focused on is the idea that their live shows are the best part of what they do; the great, punk-rock, incendiary EXPERIENCE of Odd Future, is what gets discussed. And there are real girls getting harassed, IN FUCKING FRONT OF the white dudes who are writing paeans to and defenses of Odd Future, in front of the dudes who are praising Odd Future shows. And we need to be sophisticated. We need to talk “about” “the” “music.” We need to worry about whether we sound “screechy” or like “scolds,” don’t get too upset, don’t lose your shit, don’t act like this is some kind of litmus test for whether or not you can even vaguely respect a dude as a person. Well, dudes, I have a remarkable new theory for you: When it’s YOUR ass on the line, then YOU can tell ME how upset to fucking be about it, and how I should phrase that. Seriously. When Tyler is using you as a synonym for “worthless,” when Tyler wants to shove broken glass up your asshole, ring me up, and tell me how much I should care. I’ll listen, all you want, when you’re talking about the “sophistication” we should maintain in re: discussing whether or not your asshole deserves to have broken glass shoved up it. In the meantime?

Fuck “sophistication.” Fuck “distance” Fuck “irony.” And fuck Odd Future.

"Racism is complicated, but this I know: If you’re white, and a person of color says something you’re doing is racist, they’re probably right. Not you. If a lady tells me I’m being a misogynist, or if a gay friend says I’m homophobic–I apologize, think about how they’re right, and try to change."

“Texas is pushing a bill that would require any university that has a GLBT studies program to spend an equal number of dollars promoting heterosexual studies.”

This article is cross-posted from Hay Ladies, sex, gender, and feminism in the Lone Star State.  This is one of two articles on this subject, the second of which, by Julie Sunday, can be found here.

[Update: Christian’s amendment passed late Friday night—right before he was unable to tell the Lege, while discussing another amendment, whether “African-American studies would fit into studies of Western Civilization.” These are the people we have making decisions about what actual universities can teach. PEOPLE. PEOPLE. IT IS NOT A JOKE. IT IS FOR REAL.]

Ugandan gay rights activist David Kato beaten dead in home
A sad day for human rights: Ugandan gay rights activist David Kato was found beaten to death in his home yesterday. His picture recently appeared on a Ugandan magazine next to the words “hang them,” a byproduct of a violent, anti-gay political climate fostered by David Bahati’s disgusting homosexuality legislation, which prescribes the death penalty for “serial offenders.” Bahati is a member of the potent U.S. Evangelical group “The Family,” home to many American politicos, so don’t expect this story to go away too easily. We hope like hell it won’t. source

Yes, Chick-fil-A Says, We Explicitly Do Not Like Same-Sex Couples

Over the past few weeks, the restaurant chain’s deep ties to the anti-gay movement have been exposed and uncovered by a number of activists, most notably Jeremy Hooper at Good As You. Whether it’s Focus on the Family, the National Organization for Marriage, the Pennsylvania Family Institute, or Exodus International, Chick-fil-A ties run deep.
